CHICAGO (Aug. 27, 2009) - U.S. Men's National Team head coach Bob Bradley has named a roster of 24 players, including seven Cal South alumni, that will train in advance of the critical FIFA World Cup qualifiers against El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago. The U.S. first hosts El Salvador on Sept. 5 in Sandy, Utah (tickets). Kickoff at Rio Tinto Stadium is set for 6 p.m. MT., and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN Classic and TeleFutura. Four days later, the U.S. returns to Hasley Crawford Stadium to take on Trinidad & Tobago. The match kicks off in Port-of-Spain at 7 p.m. ET, with live coverage on ESPN Classic and Galavision. Fans can follow both matches live online via ussoccer.com's newly upgraded MatchTracker.

The U.S. team will begin gathering Aug. 30 in Utah for training. Following the match against El Salvador, the U.S. team will travel Sept. 7 to Trinidad. The U.S. currently sits in third place in the final round hexagonal, collecting 10 points and a 3-2-1 record through six games. Costa Rica leads the pack with 12 points, while Honduras holds second place based on a superior goal differential to the United States. The top three teams automatically advance to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, while the fourth place team will participate in a two-leg playoff against the fifth place team from South America.

"Clearly these are very important games in our effort to qualify for 2010 FIFA World Cup," said U.S. head coach Bob Bradley, who holds an unblemished 7-0-0 record at home in World Cup qualifying. "As we expected, qualifying in this region is very competitive. Both El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago will be hungry to get points from these matches, and we have an opportunity to position ourselves well to secure a berth for South Africa."

Seventeen players on the roster return from the group that defeated No. 1-ranked Spain and finished runners up to Brazil in the FIFA Confederations Cup in June. Tim Howard, who missed the previous match in this round against El Salvador while serving a one-game suspension, has posted an impressive seven shutouts in 12 all-time World Cup qualifying appearances. Clint Dempsey, honored with the Bronze Ball as the third best player in the Confederations Cup, tallied three times in South Africa, including goals against Spain and Brazil. Dempsey is tied for second place in scoring for the U.S. in this qualifying cycle, netting four goals along with Michael Bradley, Brian Ching and Landon Donovan.

Led by team captain Carlos Bocanegra, four players have appeared in all six of the USA's final round qualifiers thus far. Donovan is the leading capwinner on the roster with 116 international appearances. Long the USA's all-time leading scorer in both goals and assists, his strike in the 2-1 qualifying win against Honduras on June 6 in Chicago lifted Donovan to the top of the team's all-time scoring list in World Cup qualifying with 11 career goals. Now with 31 career World Cup qualifying caps, Donovan is poised to surpass Kasey Keller, Eddie Pope and Claudio Reyna as the USA's leader in appearances in qualifying.

Jozy Altidore leads all U.S. scorers in the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign with five goals, including a record-setting hat trick performance in the 3-0 win against Trinidad & Tobago on April 1 in Nashville, Tenn. With the three goals, the 19-year-old Altidore became the youngest player in U.S. history to record a hat trick. Altidore also scored the first goal to spark the USA's comeback in the 2-2 draw on March 28 in El Salvador, marking the first time the team has faced and erased a two-goal deficit to earn a point on the road.

Real Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman and forward Robbie Findley are making their first appearance on a World Cup qualifying roster. Along with Robbie Rogers, they are only players on the roster without a cap in qualifying. Stuart Holden earned his first World Cup qualifying cap against Mexico. With his goal at Estadio Azteca, Charlie Davies now has recorded two goals in qualifying in three appearances.

The U.S. is playing for the first time at Rio Tinto Stadium, and only the second-ever match in the state of Utah. During qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, two goals from Donovan paced the U.S. to a 3-0 win against Costa Rica on June 4, 2005, at Rice Eccles Stadium in front of more than 40,000 fans.

Holding a lifetime record of 13-1-5 against El Salvador, the U.S. has never lost to the Salvadorans in World Cup qualifying (4-0-3). The team will be without the services of defender Oguchi Onyewu, who will be serving a one-match suspension due to yellow card accumulation.

This is the fourth consecutive World Cup qualifying cycle in which the U.S. and T & T have faced off, and the sixth overall since 1985. The U.S. holds a 10-1-2 record in qualifying against Trinidad & Tobago, including a 3-1-1 record on the road.

Following these matches, the U.S. will close out the 10-game, round robin final round with matches against Honduras and Costa Rica. The United States will travel to face Honduras on Oct. 10, and finishes group play on Oct. 14 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

CAL SOUTH SELECTS GEORGE NOUJAIM AS THE NEW STATE REFEREE ADMINISTRATOR (SRA)
The SRA position promotes & carries out all USSF National and Cal South Referee Development programs for all affiliated soccer in Southern California

Fullerton, CA (August 21, 2009) - Cal South (the California State Soccer Association - South) officially announced today the naming of George Noujaim as their new State Referee Administrator (SRA).

Cal South was named an official "joint" Youth and Adult State Association back in March by the U.S. Soccer Federation, and along with this comes the responsibility of having all of the State Referee Committee activities falling under the Cal South umbrella, which includes the facilitation of all US Soccer Referee certifications and national referee development programs.

"We were thrilled with the quality of candidates that applied for the position," said Cal South President Gregg Falk. "George has a well thought-out vision and possesses the perfect blend of referee credentials, leadership and a professional background that will serve him well in guiding and growing the Cal South Referee Programs going forward."

Cal South has long been the progressive leader in referee development on the youth side with its Referee Mentor program; R9 USSF Referee courses; youth referee camps and the high-level referee assignments and assessments that occur throughout the State and National Cup competitions. Noujaim has not only been tasked with continuing and growing Cal South's success in these areas, but also will look to implement new programs and work cooperatively with the referee and soccer community throughout all of Southern California.

"I am honored to serve the board and the referees in Cal South," said Noujaim. "I will bring common sense, integrity, and loyalty to the game. I am gratified to be joining Cal South in order to help shape the destiny of the referee community, so they may excel on and off the field of play for years to come."

Noujaim arrives at his new Cal South post with an impressive list of credentials, which led to his induction into the NISOA (National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association) National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2001. Starting out as a player for Chico State University, where he was a member of the NCAA Division II Championship Team in 1971, Noujaim went on to a prominent National USSF-ranked refereeing career which includes over 25 full international game assignments before being named to a FIFA Panel in 1992, when he was assigned to officiate in the World Cup preliminary games in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Mexico, as well as several assignments at the CONCACAF Championships.

Noujaim was also selected as a referee for ten consecutive years at the local, regional and national NCAA Divisions I, II and III Men's and Women's Collegiate Final Four. He officiated six times at the National Finals of the NAIA Men/Women Division, and four times at the World Collegiate Championships held in New Mexico. He is currently certified as holding National Assessor status with the USSF and NISOA; as a State USSF Instructor; and as an NISOA National Clinician. Noujaim is also a member of the NSCAA, appearing frequently at their conventions as a guest speaker.

USA Bid Committee Launches Online Fundraising Campaign at goUSAbid.com

NEW YORK (August 18, 2009) - The USA Bid Committee today announced a donation commitment of $100,000 from Cal South, the state soccer association for both youth and adult soccer in Southern California, toward the effort to bring the FIFA World Cup™ to the United States in 2018 or 2022. The donation from Cal South is the largest received by the USA Bid Committee to date and is an example of the type of grassroots support that will be used to fund the bid efforts going forward.

"We want to thank Cal South for affirming their early support of the USA Bid," said Sunil Gulati, the Chairman of the USA Bid Committee and President of U.S. Soccer. "Our bid is an investment, in every sense of the word, to pave the road for the next decade of the development of soccer in the United States. Cal South's support further exemplifies the leadership role that this organization has taken in all areas of promoting and developing the sport in the United States."

Cal South is an industry leader in soccer both on and off the field. Cal South teams have captured 28 youth soccer national championships this decade. The high level of play throughout their leagues has produced more than 30 percent of U.S. Men's and Women's National Team members. Cal South's State and National Cup are the two largest and most prestigious youth soccer tournaments in Southern California featuring more than 2,000 teams. Off the field, Cal South is engaged in several urban outreach initiatives throughout Los Angeles and runs the annual Soccer Nation Expo, the largest free soccer family expo in the United States, held each year at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The donation commitment by Cal South is the largest received by the USA Bid Committee to date after last week's launch of goUSAbid.com. The Web site was designed to serve as the nerve center for fundraising and all USA Bid Committee initiatives and communication leading up to FIFA's announcement in December 2010 of the host countries for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup.

"We want to thank Cal South for their initiative to support the USA Bid with their donation," said David Downs, the Executive Director of the USA Bid Committee. CAL SOUTH WINS APPROVAL AS STATE ADULT ASSOCIATION

US Soccer Gives Unanimous Approval At March 14th AGM

Cal South Soccer recently announced confirmation that it has become the adult state soccer association for Southern California. The U.S. Soccer Federation National Council formally admitted Cal South at its March 14 meeting. The net effect is that Cal South is now a joint state soccer association, responsible for administering both youth and adult programs.

Cal South President Gregg Falk welcomed the news. “Cal South is extremely excited about working with all of the existing adult leagues and programs towards growing the game in Southern California. We look forward to building on the great tradition of adult soccer that has been established in Southern California over the last forty plus years and working together toward building the best soccer association in the world.”

The council vote was unanimous.

“U.S. Soccer is very pleased to name Cal South as the official adult soccer association for Southern California,” said U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati. “We are confident that the future of adult soccer under their leadership will be very strong. We will look for ways to support Cal South’s efforts going forward.”

Cal South has been the state youth soccer association for more than 30 years and has overseen the strong growth of the youth game. It currently governs more 230 clubs and leagues, 10,300 teams and 127,000 players. The Cal South staff will apply its professional management as the joint adult and youth association to continue to expand and improve the opportunities for players of all ages to enjoy the beautiful game. Sanctioning for Cal South adult fall leagues will begin later this spring.
