Cal South Partners Helps Parents & Players Negotiate Some Often Tricky Waters
In an effort to provide our players with the most comprehensive soccer experience in the country, Cal South will be offering FREE world-class college recruiting seminars at the Cal South State Cup Round of 16 at the Kern County Soccer Park in Bakersfield, CA next weekend on Saturday, April 18th.
The National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA), the Official Scouting Organization and Provider of Recruiting Education for Cal South, will present multiple “College Recruiting Simplified” seminars, taking place at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm. The seminars will be presented by Jeff Schlicht, a former Student-Athlete of the Year at Eastern Michigan University and Player of the Year and captain at Western Michigan University, and an expert on negotiating the often tricky waters of college recruiting. Each “College Recruiting Simplified” seminar will explain the five things every student-athlete needs to know and the five things every student-athlete must do to get recruited.
Each seminar lasts about 45 minutes, and all seminars, as a Member Benefit to Cal South Members, are absolutely free to anyone interested in attending. There is no RSVP required. Just show up at the designated Cal South tent and soak up the college recruiting knowledge! We’ll see you there!

US Soccer Gives Unanimous Approval At March 14th AGM
Cal South Soccer recently announced confirmation that it has become the adult state soccer association for Southern California. The U.S. Soccer Federation National Council formally admitted Cal South at its March 14 meeting. The net effect is that Cal South is now a joint state soccer association, responsible for administering both youth and adult programs.
Cal South President Gregg Falk welcomed the news. “Cal South is extremely excited about working with all of the existing adult leagues and programs towards growing the game in Southern California. We look forward to building on the great tradition of adult soccer that has been established in Southern California over the last forty plus years and working together toward building the best soccer association in the world.”
The council vote was unanimous.
“U.S. Soccer is very pleased to name Cal South as the official adult soccer association for Southern California,” said U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati. “We are confident that the future of adult soccer under their leadership will be very strong. We will look for ways to support Cal South’s efforts going forward.”
Cal South has been the state youth soccer association for more than 30 years and has overseen the strong growth of the youth game. It currently governs more 230 clubs and leagues, 10,300 teams and 127,000 players. The Cal South staff will apply its professional management as the joint adult and youth association to continue to expand and improve the opportunities for players of all ages to enjoy the beautiful game.Sanctioning for Cal South adult fall leagues will begin later this spring.

The 2009 US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP) Champions were crowned on Sunday at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. These state-level US Youth Soccer ODP 1992 and 1993 Boys and Girls teams, Under-16 and Under-15, earned their way to the US Youth Soccer ODP Championships by winning their respective regional championships.
Cal South captured both the 1993 Girls and 1993 Boys championship trophies, giving Cal South its 15th and 16th titles in the ODP National Championships since the first tournament was held in 2000. Cal South has now won 40% of the total title count (16 out of 40).

1993 Girls The Cal South 1993 Girls beat North Texas, 1:0. Kylie McCarthy gained control of the ball after the keeper cleared it and from outside the box, bent the ball into the far side of the goal in the 65th minute. McCarthy's goal was all Cal South needed to win the championship. For expanded coverage of this game, click here.
Virginia and Minnesota went up against each other in the consolation game and with two goals, Virginia won. Eleanore Zoepfl found the back of the net in the 13th minute and Katy Colas put Virginia up by two early in the second half (42:00).
1993 Boys Oklahoma Boys 1993 put on a good show as the first team to represent their State Association in the US Youth Soccer ODP Championships. Cal South was up by two early in the second half after Eduardo Quezada scored in the 24th minute and Neil Ignacio put one away in the 46th minute. After two penalty kicks, both of which Jack Coleman finished, Oklahoma put the game into overtime. Cal South's team captain Juan Gutierrez scored in the 90th minute but with two 15 minute overtime halves, the game wasn't over. Oklahoma's Jack Coleman finished his hat trick in the 96th minute and tied the match again. In the 105th minute, Gutierrez came back to score the final goal for Cal South and claim the championship. Indiana went 2:1 over Virginia this morning. Leading off the game, D.J. Schilinger scored Indiana's first goal in the 36th minute. Bringing the score to 2:0, Indiana's Josh Pigg helped solidify the lead with a goal of his own in the 54th minute. Four minutes later, Virginia's David Salazar scored in the 58th minute. Virginia wasn't able to finish again and Indiana won, 2:0.
1992 Girls After Cal South's victory over North Texas in the US Youth Soccer ODP Championships last year, North Texas was ready to prove themselves and they did. Taylor Matthews started the match with a shot in the upper 90 only 5 minutes into the game. Julian Jeffrey put North Texas up by two with a goal in the 64th minute. Cal South's Jazmin Ponce finished one in the 81st minute putting her team within reach, but North Texas' Courtney Smith finished the game with a goal in the 88th to put North Texas on top this year, 3:1.
Maryland also started the scoring early when Alexandra Doll put one away in the 5th minute of today's consolation match against Kansas. Maryland's Janice Johnson found the back of the net 56th minute. Maryland won, 2:0.
1992 Boys Indiana's Bryce Rockwell-Ashton earned his adidas Golden Boot award today scoring the lone goal of the championship match against Cal North in the 16th minute. It was his second goal of the tournament. This was the Indiana Boys 1992's second US Youth Soccer ODP Championship. They are the only returning champion to reclaim the title this year.
Eastern Pennsylvania and North Carolina tied in the consolation match today. They game went back and forth with the last three goals scored in less than 12 minutes. North Carolina's David Lane lead the scoring with a goal in the 19th minute. Eastern Pennsylvania regrouped in the second half and came out strong with Zachary Wolfe finding the back of the net in the 50th minute and Dalton Carroll scoring his second goal of the tournament in the 57th minute. Edward Mullin scored the final goal to tie the match for North Carolina in the 62nd minute. Eastern Pennsylvania and North Carolina tied for the bronze medal, 2:2.

WEST COAST FC TAKES 2 IN U13 BRACKET, LEGENDS & ARSENAL TAKE U12 TITLES
(Rancho Capistrano, CA) – Four teams in the U12 and U13 brackets were named as champions at the 2009 Cal South National Cup this weekend at the Rancho Capistrano Soccer Fields, as the National Cup concluded its Youngers brackets play. The Cal South National Cup is the first step on the ladder by which teams from Southern California may advance towards the crown jewel of youth soccer, the US Youth Soccer National Championships.
Two teams from the West Coast Futbol Club captured the titles in the Under-13 bracket. The West Coast FC U13 girls, after outscoring their opponents 19-1 in their previous five matches, found themselves locked up 1-all with the South Bay Force Black at the end of regulation and two overtimes with the South Bay Force Black girls. West Coast found themselves in possession of a championship trophy by sinking three penalty kicks while South Bay missed all opportunities to match them. On the U13 boys’ side, West Coast saw Legends FC score as many goals against them as had been scored in the entire tournament up to that point – two – but summoned up a trio of their own to grab their National Cup trophy.
Legends FC had a team in the U12 boys’ final as well, who prevailed 2-0 over the San Diego Surf White to secure their ticket to the Regionals. On the girls’ side, the U12 Arsenal FC had just gone through two scoreless matches in the two previous rounds where they outlasted their opponents on penalty kicks by a single PK each. In the final match against yet another team from Legends FC, a single goal was all they needed to wear the championship crown.
The opening round for the Olders brackets (U14-U18) of the 2009 Cal South National Cup gets underway on the weekend of April 18-19, while the U19 teams don’t begin play until May 23. Champions from each bracket in the Cal South National Cup, as well as teams chosen through Far West Regional League play and several wild card teams, will gather in Lancaster, CA from June 15-21 as Cal South gets their chance to play host to the US Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships. Winners in the U14 to U19 brackets then move on to the US Youth Soccer National Championships from July 21-26 in Lancaster, MA.

WINNERS MOVE ON TO PRESIDENTS TOURNAMENT REGIONALS IN JUNE
(Lancaster, CA) – The Youngers brackets of the 2009 Cal South State Cup finished up the lasttwo weekends of February with the crowning of 10 champions in the U9 through U13 age brackets. Play had been delayed off and on through February due to inclement weather, but totally concluded by March 1. In a showing of just how diverse the strength of play has grown throughout Southern California, teams from ten different clubs took home State Cup trophies in the Youngers round.
Now deep into its 31st year, around 1400 teams annually take part in the Cal South State Cup for the honor of being crowned as State Cup Champion. For the first time this year, Cal South State Cup champions will get the chance to directly move on to another level, as US Youth Soccer will be holding the inaugural Presidents Tournament Regional and National Championships later this year.
State Cup champions in the U13-U17 brackets will now move forward to represent Cal South at the US Youth Soccer Region IV Presidents Tournament in Tri-Cities, Washington from June 11-14, 2009, where they will face teams from the 13 other western states that make up US Youth Soccer’s Region IV. Champions at the regional level would then move on to the US Youth Soccer Presidents Tournament National Championships, scheduled to be held in Raleigh, North Carolina from July 16-19, 2009.

(Los Angeles, CA) – It seems last weekend was a busy one for award shows in Los Angeles. One day before a series of shiny, gold statuettes were handed out to the Hollywood set, over five hundred attendees packed into the main ballroom of the L.A. Wilshire Grand on Saturday, February 21 for the 2009 Nike Awards Banquet.
Produced annually in conjunction with Soccer Nation Expo, the Nike Awards Banquet is Cal South’s opportunity to say “thank you” to its best and brightest, from players to coaches to administrators to, in a first this year, a pair of Cal South alumni who have gone on to great professional and international success and renown.
Scanning the crowd would have brought glimpses of several soccer world luminaries amongst the mix of Cal South board members, staff, volunteers and award winners: United States Adult Soccer Association Chairman Brooks McCormick, US Futsal Chairman and CEO Alex Para, LA84 Foundation Vice-President of Education Wayne Wilson, US Youth Soccer Assistant National Coaching Director Dr. John Thomas, International President of Youth for Human Rights Dr. Mary Shuttleworth, California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce Chairman Joel Ayala, and Raul de Quesada, Fox Soccer Channel’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and On-Air Promotions. Representatives from Cal South sponsors and partners such as Nike, Northwestern Mutual, Chivas USA, Los Angeles Galaxy and Velocity Sports Performance filled the tables of the happily dining crowd as well.
Cocktails, dinner, keyboard accompaniment by Mark Kelly, and a robust version of the National Anthem sung by Dominic Domingo, Cal South player and grandson of world-famous tenor and conductor Placido Domingo, kicked off the evening’s festivities. This was followed by a three-song dance performance by Kids on Stage for a Better World, a group representing Youth for Human Rights, a Cal South partner, and then a newly produced Public Service Announcement featuring Chivas USA player and Cal South alumnus Jonathan Bornstein was debuted before the banquet crowd.
Then it came time for the awards themselves. Nearly three dozen Cal South members were honored during the show, included the first two Cal South players inducted into the Cal South Hall of Fame: Cobi Jones, former U.S. National Team mainstay and L.A. Galaxy player and current assistant coach, and Joy Fawcett, winner of a pair of Olympic gold medals and World Cup titles with the U.S. Women’s National Team.
Other awards of note included the Fox Soccer Channel Team Spirit award, handed out this year to the Crusaders Soccer Club Spirit Girls U14 Red team, the L.A. Galaxy Volunteer of the Year award given out to Maria Lenhoff, and the Chivas USA Parent of the Year award, won this year by Don and Eleni Maurer. The Maurers were recognized for establishing TOGA: Temecula Outgrown Game Attire, which provides used soccer gear to underprivileged players. L.A. CONVENTION CENTER ROCKED THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND
(Los Angeles, CA) – Surely, as a soccer fan of the first order, you were at the Los Angeles Convention Center recently for Soccer Nation Expo 2009. What’s that? You weren’t? Well, we’re sure you had some pretty pressing business that kept you away, but we should clue you in on one clear fact: you missed one great party!
Soccer Nation Expo, Cal South’s annual celebration of the beautiful game, landed in the L.A. Convention Center’s South Hall on Saturday, February 21 to kick off two amazing days of high-spirited soccer action, education, shopping, networking and just plain fun, at the biggest free family soccer expo in the country. Over 24,000 rabid soccer fans – 14,000 on Saturday and 10,000 more on Sunday – attended the family-friendly and fan-interactive exposition, which featured a little something for just about any area of interest within the world of soccer.
Attendees were treated to autograph sessions with famed soccer players such as Brazilian superstar and 3-time FIFA Player of the Year Marta, U.S. National Team scoring phenom Abby Wambach, former Mexican National Team players Jorge Campos, Ramón Ramírez, Claudio Suárez and Martín Zúñiga, Chivas USA players Justin Braun, Alecko Eskandarian, Zack Thornton, Atiba Harris, Jim Curtain and Shavar Thomas, the L.A. Galaxy’s Edson Buddle and Chris Klein, and several players from the new Los Angeles Sol professional women’s team (with whom Marta recently signed). Marta also took part in a special 4v4 “Kingman” game on Saturday, February 21, with a team of young Cal South players, while a couple of lucky fans won a chance to shoot PKs against Martín Zúñiga, popularly known as “El Pulpo” (The Octopus) for his tenacity in the net.
Coaching clinics were taught on Soccer Nation Expo’s “Center Pitch” area, featuring such world-class coaches such as North Carolina Women’s head coach Anson Dorrance, former Northern Ireland National Team head coach Lawrie Sanchez, Chivas USA head coach Preki, Everton FC’s Tony Farrell, L.A. Galaxy assistant coach Dave Sarachan, U.S. National Staff Coach Rene Miramontes, UCLA Women’s head coach Jillian Ellis, and Jeff Tipping, Director of Coaching Development for the NSCAA. Coaches who signed up online or at the door for the VIP Coach Pass received badges which gained them access to special VIP seating for the clinics, as well as entrance to exclusive VIP classroom sessions and panel discussions featuring many of the coaches named above, along with USC Women’s head coach Ali Khosroshahin and Abner Rogers, the recently named head coach of the Los Angeles Sol.
For fast and furious soccer action, there were a host of great 5v5 games on hand at the Nike Five 2009 Southwest Futsal Regional Championship. Teams in each bracket – 5 boys’ brackets, 4 girls’ brackets and one adult men’s bracket – played a series of preliminary games through both days of Soccer Nation Expo, and then the top two teams in each bracket faced off in a deciding championship final. The Nike Shoe Trial area was a popular hangout for those wishing to try their gear out before they bought it, but there were also ample opportunities to expand your shopping experience even further with over 100 exhibitor booths featuring the latest in soccer gear, fashion and a wide array of products.
And if you were one of those proverbial early birds, you would doubtless have been one of the first 500 attendees in line each day who received a special Nike goodie bag. It certainly does pay to be early at Soccer Nation Expo!
