CAL SOUTH AT THE 2009 ODP REGION IV CAMPS: ’96 Girls Go 18 for 18

Moscow, ID (July 22, 2009) - Even with all of the major successes of the Cal South Olympic Development Program (ODP) over the years, it seems there are still some firsts at hand. For the 1996 Girls' team that attended the 2009 US Youth Soccer ODP Region IV camps in Moscow, Idaho in July, this meant becoming the first Cal South ODP girls' team to have all 18 of its attending players selected for the Region IV ODP pool. While a handful of boys' teams have seen this happen (included the 1994 Boys just last summer), this is the first time it has happened for a girls' squad.

Richard Boon, head coach for the '96 Girls, was ecstatic: "I've been coaching for ODP for a while now, and without taking anything away from the kids who came before, this is one of the most talented age groups I have ever seen. Because of the reputation of our program, it was interesting to see how the girls reacted to the fact that every team they face wants to act like a 'giant-killer.' It gave my girls something to prove to the other teams, and they succeeded wildly." After three solid victories over Cal North, Washington and Colorado (5-1, 5-1, 4-1), Cal South's Pilar Torres emerged as the top goal-scorer of the week.

144 Cal South ODP players spread across eight Cal South ODP teams attended the camps which began late in June and carried through most of July. 103 of those 144 players were selected to continue on with the Region IV pool teams, with 50 of the 72 girls carried over (69%) and 53 of the 72 boys (73%). Five other Cal South girls that did not attend camp due to injury or had already gained selection to the National squads were also named to the Regional rosters, giving Cal South a total of 55 girls (23% of the total players on the Regional rosters). With fewer pool spots available on the boys' side, the 53 Cal South players named there make up an impressive 29% of the Region IV pool total.

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 19, 2009) - Eight champions in the Under-14 through Under-17 Boys and Girls age groups have been named at the 2009 US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup Finals. Cheers were heard throughout the WRAL Soccer Complex in Raleigh, N.C., as teams competed in the final matches of the tournament looking for positive results.

Here's a recap of the championship matches…

Under-14 Boys
In the first day of round robin games, Cal South's Los Alamitos Titans and Hurst United FC (N-TX) ended with a 4-3 score in favor of Hurst, a team that went undefeated through round robin. The two teams met again in the championships match, but the results greatly differed. The Titans had control of the game with goals in the 26^th and 44^th minutes by Mario Cruz and Javier Hernandez. Hurst knocked one past the keeper in the 51^st minute and Alejandro Martinez secured Titans' 3-1 victory in stoppage time.

Under-15 Boys
Thunder United (S-TX) Under-15 Boys traveled to the Presidents Cup Finals looking to give their all on the field and travel home with title of champion. They made it to the championship match where they faced Cal South's Santa Barbara, a team that was undefeated through the preliminaries. Thunder's Javier Lopez had a 10^th minute shot for a 1-0 score early on. Neither team was able to finish and Thunder held onto the 1-0 lead for the victory.

Under-16 Boys
Crusaders United (MA) and Mako United (FL) tied in round robin play 2-2 and today's championship match was no different, only today they were able to battle it out to determine a winner. Tyler Savonen (51:00) and Andrew Sheridan (78:00) scored for Crusaders and Jonathan Quintero (26:00) and Jermaine Hibbert (70:00) scored for Mako. At the end of overtime the score was still deadlocked sending it to PKs where Crusaders ended victoriously 5-4.

Under-17 Boys
Spartans FC (MD) took a 4-1 victory in the Under-17 Boys match-up with Indian Magic (IN). Bryant Venture (20:00), Royer Rosales (38:00) (80:00) and Michael Benavides (85:00) all scored for Spartans.

Under-14 Girls
Little Illini (IL) and Premier FC (WA) Under-14 Girls faced each other in the last game of round robin play yesterday with Premier walking away with a 2-1 win. As the teams met for the championship match, Illini was ready for their competition. Dagny Olson had back to back goals in the 29^th and 31^st minutes with Jenna Ayers completing Illini's third goal in the 43^rd minute. Premier was unable to finish for Illini to take the 3-0 win.

Under-15 Girls
Cal South's So Cal Rush Under-15 Girls were seated in first place during round robin play, with Kosmos Fire (E-NY) in second. The two teams met in the championship match where the Kosmos had two early goals from Shannon Murphy (4:00) and Stephanie Morini (12:00). Rush's Aliyah Brown brought the score to 2-1 with a 35^th minute goal and teammate Megan Morgenstern tied it up in the 52^nd minute. In overtime, both teams finished, Kosmos' Brittany Muller in the 92^nd minute and Morgenstern in the 110^th minute for Rush for a 3-3 tie. PKs determined the match with Kosmos coming out on top, 5-4 for the championship title.

Under-16 Girls
West Michigan Fire Jrs (MI) Under-16 Girls were undefeated through preliminary games as they entered the championship match against MSC Lady Strikers (TN). Knowing the challenge they were facing, the Strikers' Lauren Bennett netted one in the 8^th minute for the early 1-0 lead. The Fire's Lindsey Beiri evened the score in the 53^rd minute, but Brooke Zeis gave the Strikers the upper-hand in the 59^th minute. Morgan Thomason finalized the Strikers 3-1 victory and right to be called Presidents Cup Finals Champions in the 66^th minute.

Under-17 Girls
Cal South's CFC United was looking to continue their record of being undefeated through the Presidents Cup Finals, but Sachem FC (MA) had other plans. Neither team was able to put one away until the 55^th minute when Sachem's Kristina Braga netted one, and five minutes later, Courtney Garrity hit the CFC equalizer in the 60^th minute. It was an own goal in the 100^th minute that gave Sachem the 2-1 victory.

6 CAL SOUTH TEAMS ATTEND 2009 PRESIDENTS CUP NATIONAL ROUND

July 15, 2009 (Raleigh, NC) - Six teams from Cal South will begin play in Raleigh, North Carolina on Friday, July 17 at the 2009 US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup National Championships. The full event takes place from July 16-19 and will feature Presidents Cup Regional Championship boys and girls teams in the Under-14 through Under-17 age groups from all four US Youth Soccer regions.

The six Cal South teams won their berths at the Presidents Cup Nationals at the US Youth Soccer Region IV Presidents Cup held in Tri-Cities, Washington last month. Cal South teams won eight out of ten possible regional championships at that event, including both U13 trophies (U13 teams do not move on to the National round). All eight winning teams from Cal South attended the regional event via their excellent play at the 2009 Cal South State Cup, with five of the teams entering as 2009 Cal South State Cup champions and the other three attending as runners-up in their State Cup bracket (two via wild card placement). Four of the six Cal South teams attending the Presidents Cup national round are 2009 State Cup champions.

Cal South announced last week they were donating stipends in the sum of $10,000 to each of the six teams attending the Presidents Cup National Championships to help with traveling expenses. Combined with similar amounts given to the six Cal South teams attending the US Youth Soccer National Championships next week in Lancaster, Massachusetts (July 21-26, 2009), and the amounts given to teams taking part in the regionals leading into each of these national events, this makes over $300,000 donated by Cal South to its teams this year. Much of the money for these stipends derives from entry fees paid to participate in the Cal South National and State Cup competitions.

July 10, 2009 (Fullerton, CA) - Providing the ultimate in "member benefits" to its leagues and clubs, Cal South recently announced the donation of $120,000 - $10,000 each - to its twelve teams set to attend the pair of upcoming national US Youth Soccer events being contested within the next three weeks.

Six Cal South teams attending the US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup from July 16-19 in Raleigh, North Carolina and six teams attending the US Youth Soccer National Championships from July 21-26 in Lancaster, Massachusetts each received a subsidy of $10,000 from Cal South. Previously, the 35 Cal South teams that attended the Far West Regionals received $2500 each, while the 10 Cal South teams attending the Presidents Cup Region IV tournament received $5000 each. Factoring in the tournament fees that Cal South also picked up for its teams in all of these events, this adds up to over $300,000 Cal South has provided this year to its participating teams.

The six Cal South teams attending the Presidents Cup - the BU14 Los Alamitos Titans, the GU15 So Cal Rush Nike, the BU15 Santa Barbara SC, the BU16 Bakersfield Brigade, the GU17 California FC United and the BU17 ConquistAmerica - earned their spots by winning at the 2009 US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup Region IV Championships in Tri-Cities, Washington in June.

Five of the six teams attending the National Championships - the BU14 West Coast FC, the GU15 and GU16 So Cal Blues, the BU16 Arsenal FC and the BU17 CZ Elite - won their berths via capturing a title at the 2009 US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals in Lancaster, CA in June. Cal South won 9 regional championships in all, but four of them were in the U12 and U13 categories, and only U14-U19 champions move on to the National round. The sixth attending Cal South team will be the GU15 San Diego Surf, who qualified for the Nationals through the US Youth Soccer National League gaming circuit. The Regional-winning GU16 So Cal Blues are performing a dual role at the Nationals, as they are also attending as a National League representative.

CAL SOUTH APPROVES 6 MORE NEW ADULT LEAGUES

Coast Soccer League, Universal Soccer League, Adult Soccer League of Simi Valley, Elsinore Women's Soccer League, Tri Counties Soccer Leagues & Anahuak Family Soccer League Come On Board

June 25, 2009 (Fullerton, CA) - The Cal South Board of Directors has approved six more new leagues for the 2009-2010 seasonal year. The six new approved leagues include the Coast Soccer League, Anahuak Family Soccer League, Universal Soccer League, Elsinore Women's Soccer League, Tri Counties Soccer League and the Adult Soccer League of Simi Valley.

As a reminder to interested leagues, the deadline for all Cal South Adult League Applications is coming up fast on August 1, 2009. The next Cal South Board Meeting where adult league applications will be considered for approval is on July 11, 2009 at the Cal South Corporate Office. June 21, 2009 (Lancaster, CA) -- Teams from Cal South captured nine championship trophies at today's Finals round of the 2009 US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals at the Lancaster National Soccer Center. Cal South went into the day with fifteen teams playing in fourteen finals at the competition, which began on Monday, June 15 and carried through the entire week. Championship teams in the U14-U19 age brackets will now head to the US Youth Soccer National Championship from July 21-26 in Lancaster, Massachusetts.

Cal South's West Coast Futbol Club made good in all three championship finals in which they played, nabbing the BU13 and GU13 titles (both decided in 2-0 shutouts over teams from Cal North), and then locked down their club's third title of the day with a thrilling 3-1 overtime victory over Arizona's SC del Sol White for the BU14 crown.

Two other Cal South clubs grabbed a pair of titles each. So Cal Blues outlasted De Anza Force Blue of Cal North 2-1 for the GU16 crown in the early afternoon, while their GU15 squad started off the day's competition with a 7:00 am victory over Sereno '94 White of Arizona, 3-1. Arsenal Futbol Club not only had their BU16 squad go toe-to-toe with New Mexico's Elite FC Gladiators in a 4-3 championship win, but then found their GU12 team hit overtime against Cal North's Mustang Mavericks, over whom Arsenal prevailed, 2-1.

Other Cal South clubs that won Far West Regional titles on the day were the BU12 Legends FC, who woke up Cal North's Redwood Juventus with a start this morning with a 4-1 7:00 am victory, and the BU17 CZ Elite, who faced off against United FC in the only match-up of the day between Cal South clubs. CZ Elite took that match in a 4-0 shutout.

June 20, 2009 (Lancaster, CA) -- While one Cal South team missed out on making history at the US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals, fifteen other Cal South teams get to continue theirs by winning their semi-final matches this morning, allowing them to each compete for a Far West Regional championship trophy on Sunday, June 21 on the fields of the Lancaster National Soccer Center.

Cal South has fifteen teams playing in fourteen of the sixteen finals matches, including a match-up between two of its own teams in the Boys Under-17 final. The United FC and CZ Elite squads met each other in the preliminary rounds, playing to a 3-3 draw. Cal South teams face off against teams from Cal North in seven of the finals matches, while three clubs are still in the running for multiple titles: So Cal Blues (4), West Coast FC (3) and Arsenal FC (3).

The GU19 Eagles SC, who won four Cal South National Cup titles over the past six years, were looking to close out their youth careers with a final trip to the US Youth Soccer National Championships, where they previously won a pair of titles, as U14s in 2004 and as U17s in 2007. Unfortunately, they missed their chance in a tight, 1-0 loss to the Colorado Rush Nike early Saturday morning. Teams that succeed in the Far West Regionals as champions in the U14-U19 brackets will move on to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships from July 20-26 in Lancaster, Massachusetts.
