West Coast FC Wins 3rd & 4th National Cup Titles of Year
Championship Teams Move On To U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regionals in Lancaster, CA - June 15-21

May 18, 2009 (San Juan Capistrano, CA) - Seven more championship trophies were handed out to some most deserving teams this weekend during the Cal South National Cup Semi-Finals and Finals rounds, held on the fields of the Rancho Capistrano Soccer Complex on Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17. Teams in the U14 through U17 age brackets competed to not only win a coveted National Cup trophy, but also to automatically advance towards the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regionals in June in Lancaster, CA, the next stop on the way to the crown jewel of youth soccer, the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Lancaster, Massachussets in July.

The U16 girls of the Slammers Futbol Club achieved an extremely rare feat: winning five consecutive National Cup titles, starting as U12 champions in 2005. But getting their fifth in a row wasn't easy. After a string of shutouts led them into Saturday's semi-final, they ended up locked 1-all with the San Diego Surf White at the end of regulation and overtime. The Slammers overcame the Surf on penalty kicks, 4-2, leading to a hard-fought Sunday duel against the Eagles Soccer Club for the GU16 title, in which the Slammers prevailed 2-1. The Slammers FC Girls Under-18 team also grabbed a National Cup title for the club the previous weekend in Temecula.

For sheer club success in the Cal South National Cup this year, no one comes close to West Coast Futbol Club, which captured its third and fourth titles of the tournament this weekend, having already seen its boys and girls U13 teams both rack up National Cup titles back in March. The West Coast boys team met up against the Irvine Strikers in Saturday's U14 final, shutting the Strikers out, 2-0. In Sunday's U16 final match, West Coast FC was involved in laying down another shutout, blanking the South Bay Force Black, 4-0 to grab the National Cup crown.

In other boys' bracket action, Aztecs FC followed suit in shutting out Arsenal FC, 2-0 to win the BU15 title, while the Boys Under-17 United Futbol Club had to battle FC San Diego through overtime to crawl out victorious with a 1-0 shutout. In the remaining girls' matches, CZ Elite Soccer defeated the San Diego Surf to nab the GU15 title, and in the GU17 title match, the Real So Cal Blue team pulled off the amazing feat of defeating the 2007 National Champion So Cal Blues (who also competed for last year's National Championship), 1-0.

The U19s will begin play this Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 23, with their Finals round to be held on June 7, which will complete National Cup play for the year. All winning teams at the Cal South National Cup in the U12 to U19 brackets will move on to Lancaster, CA on June 15-21 for the Cal South-hosted U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regionals. Teams that succeed as champions there in the U14-U19 brackets would then move on to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships from July 20-26 in Lancaster, Massachusetts.
